About this calculator
Dr. Kara Caldwell built this feline calorie calculator around the Resting Energy Requirement (RER) formula plus AAHA/AAFP life-stage factors, so you can go from weight + body condition score to daily kcal in one screen.

Cat feeding FAQ
How do I find kcal on cat food?
Use the guaranteed analysis panel; enter the value listed as “kcal per can/cup.” Match that label unit in Step 4 and the calculator converts to cups, Tbsp, or grams.
Can I mix brands or protein types?
Yes. Choose “Both Wet & Dry,” add each food’s kcal, then split calories in Step 5. Use the lowest-kcal product as your baseline if you rotate recipes.
When should I call the vet?
Before any weight-loss program and immediately if appetite drops for 24 hours, or if your cat has diabetes, kidney disease, is pregnant, or under 12 months (see the WSAVA guidelines).
